Allergy Aware Brands

Picture
Allergy Menu
This is a company built by a mother of a child with allergies. It includes safe foods for people with different kinds of food allergies. There is a colored allergy identifier and a search by allergens function that makes purchasing fast and simple. They carry a variety of products that are allergy friendly, from snacks and healthy foods all the way to sugary treats and something to satisfy those with a sweet tooth.

Ben's Bakery
They are a local company based in Nova Scotia. There baked goods are delicious, many of which are allergy friendly. They also have an allergy statement on their web site which you can check here. I have personally contacted them and have been assured that they take allergies very seriously and always list a may contain warning if they are even processing an allergen near the safe production lines. Our family consumes their products without any problems. Many of their products are dairy, egg, and nut free.

Chapman's
They offer a variety of ice creams and frozen treats. They have specific lines for people with special diets, such as gluten free, peanut free, lactose free, and even no sugar added and fat free for diabetics and people who are watching their diet. You can view the details here. Keep in mind that most of those share facilities, and the lactose free line contains milk protein, only it's treated with the enzyme that breaks down lactose, so it should not be consumed with those who are allergic to milk.

Compliments Foods
This is the Sobey's store brand. Many of their products are allergy friendly. They have a labeling system that lists the top most common allergens in Canada, and they include may contain warnings on all their products when necessary. They have a strict policy regarding cross contamination. We've never had a problem with any of their products. I find their labeling to be quite clear and direct.

They also deliver right to your door.

President's Choice
Like other grocery stores, this brand belongs to Loblaws, otherwise known as Atlantic Superstore here in Nova Scotia. They also have a strict cross contamination policy and include may contain warnings on their products.

Quaker Oats
This is a company that I am quite impressed with. They label their products with "contains allergen x" in addition to the ingredients. If the allergen is in the top most common in Canada, they will list it in the may contain statement even though it is in the ingredient list. This way they make sure that the consumer is protected. In addition, for those who were unaware, Quaker is one of the few companies that put out a public statement last year about their rice cake products. They advised consumers that all their rice cakes will now be processed in a peanut/nut and dairy facility, something which is not mandated by law and that many manufacturers don't take the time to do. Despite the fact that this was unfortunate for many allergic individuals, I found the idea that a company takes this type of initiative towards allergic consumers speaks volumes about their understanding of allergies and respect for their customer base. We consume Quaker products in our home. Many of their products are nut, peanut, milk, and egg free. Their labeling system is also very clear and comprehensive.

Scotsburn
They offer a variety of products that are gluten free, egg free, and peanut free. You can view a detailed statement about allergens by clicking here.
